Book 1 Ch 7-8, Book 2 Ch 1-2

Book 1
CHAPTER 7
"If there was hope, it must lie in the proles" (69)
Here he talks about how Oceania could be overthrown, he recognizes that the biggest group in Oceania are the proles as they make up 85% of the country. If they got together they could overthrow the government. Unfortunately tho they are not very smart and ignorant to the control over them,
CHAPTER 8
"he saw that it was a human hand severed at the wrist. . . he kicked it into the gutter" (84)
I believe that this quote beautifully illustrates the way Oceania treats the whole 'Peace is war' thing they have going on. Their citizens are so used to it that they don't mind or truly really think twice about such incidents. A rocket had passed by and Winston saw the hand lying there after the attack and didn't find disgust in it at all. He just saw it as a bother.

Book 2
CHAPTER 1
"on it was written, in a large unformed handwriting 'I love you'" (108)
In this chapter, Winston discovers that dark-haired girl loves him. This is dangerous and they chose to meet in Victory Square at a Eurasian prisoners' tormenting.
CHAPTER 2
"'It was something in your face. . .  as soon as I saw you I knew you were against them'" (122)
This quote is a quote from Julia when Winston asked her why she was attracted to him. Julia is a very smart and sneaky girl as she is able to look like a very dedicated citizen when in reality she's far from that. I have a prediction/concern, if she could tell that he was against Oceania, then who else can tell?

CHAPTERS 2-6

Chapter 2:
"With those children, he thought, that wretched woman must lead a life of terror. Another year, two years, and they would be watching her night and day for symptoms of unorthodoxy." (24)

Winston Smith is a man that has committed thought crime as he has not only bought a diary but he also has non-patriotic views written in it, all punishable by death. The children serve as junior spies that spy on their surrounding adults and keep them in check. Winston knows that these kids will grow up to become more vigilant and dangerous to society as they will grow up to look out for big brother.
Chapter 3:
"Winston could not definitely remember a time when his country had not been at war" (32)

The country of Oceania believes that you must be at war to be at peace. They have issues with Eurasia and Eastasia and when they ally with one, they fight with the other.
Chapter 4:
"Winston's greatest pleasure in life was his work. . . delicate pieces of forgery in which you had nothing to guide you except your knowledge of Ingsoc and your estimate of what the party wanted you to say" (43)

Winston works in the ministry of Truth for the Records Department. Here he alters the truth of articles as to always show that big brother is not wrong and that big brother knows everything. I believe that this very much relates to today's day as we have Donald Trump in presidency and he gave us the ever so infamous"alternative facts". These alternative facts are altered versions of the truth, or just lies. These alternative facts go in favor of Trump so he can always look right.
Chapter 5:
"We're destroying words-scores of them. . . we're cutting the language down to the bone" (51)

This quote is from a conversation between Winston and Syme, Syme is working on the new edition of newspeak which is a new language whose purpose is to make it so that citizens cannot say anti-Oceanic views. Their logic is that if no one knows the word for the rebellion, then it just won't be said or even happen. This new language is seen as a way to control people.
Chapter 6:
"Chastity was as deeply ingrained in them as Party loyalty" (67)

This refrain from sexual acts shows just how controlling Oceania is. They are so controlling that from a young age they condition their citizens to build a resistance/tolerance for sexual desires as these are seen as a vice. The only reason the government wanted their citizens to have sex is to continue repopulating the country.
