Chapter 2:
"With those children, he thought, that wretched woman must lead a life of terror. Another year, two years, and they would be watching her night and day for symptoms of unorthodoxy." (24)
Winston Smith is a man that has committed thought crime as he has not only bought a diary but he also has non-patriotic views written in it, all punishable by death. The children serve as junior spies that spy on their surrounding adults and keep them in check. Winston knows that these kids will grow up to become more vigilant and dangerous to society as they will grow up to look out for big brother.
Chapter 3:
"Winston could not definitely remember a time when his country had not been at war" (32)
The country of Oceania believes that you must be at war to be at peace. They have issues with Eurasia and Eastasia and when they ally with one, they fight with the other.
Chapter 4:
"Winston's greatest pleasure in life was his work. . . delicate pieces of forgery in which you had nothing to guide you except your knowledge of Ingsoc and your estimate of what the party wanted you to say" (43)
Winston works in the ministry of Truth for the Records Department. Here he alters the truth of articles as to always show that big brother is not wrong and that big brother knows everything. I believe that this very much relates to today's day as we have Donald Trump in presidency and he gave us the ever so infamous"alternative facts". These alternative facts are altered versions of the truth, or just lies. These alternative facts go in favor of Trump so he can always look right.
Chapter 5:
"We're destroying words-scores of them. . . we're cutting the language down to the bone" (51)
This quote is from a conversation between Winston and Syme, Syme is working on the new edition of newspeak which is a new language whose purpose is to make it so that citizens cannot say anti-Oceanic views. Their logic is that if no one knows the word for the rebellion, then it just won't be said or even happen. This new language is seen as a way to control people.
Chapter 6:
"Chastity was as deeply ingrained in them as Party loyalty" (67)
This refrain from sexual acts shows just how controlling Oceania is. They are so controlling that from a young age they condition their citizens to build a resistance/tolerance for sexual desires as these are seen as a vice. The only reason the government wanted their citizens to have sex is to continue repopulating the country.
I really liked the quotes you pick and that you chose one for every chapter! Although, I think some of the quotes could be a little longer so you can really go in depth in your analysis. Also, adding pictures can help separate the text so it doesn't seem too long. Overall though, I really liked your page!
ReplyDeleteI liked your analysis and layout of your quotes. Picking a quote for each chapter was very creative and you went into great depth with each piece. All of these quotes really highlight the restrictive and depressing nature that existed in Oceania. Your chapter one analysis really emphasizes the restrictiveness of Oceania, with the explanation of how Winston's own thinking and ideals were punishable in such a place.
ReplyDeleteI like your quote for chapter 3 and how it shows that they are always at war. Oceania seems like a terrible place to live but the fact that they are always in a state of war really seals the deal.
ReplyDeleteAlso I like how you found a quote that encompasses exactly what Newspeak is and is doing. The one thing I would have how language is used to control people.liked you to
Having a quote for every chapter was a nice touch. I agree with your take on Newspeak's intentions to prevent a rebellion by tampering with the language.
ReplyDeleteI used the same quote for chapter 3 and I said the exact same thing. I really love the way you mentioned the "WAR IS PEACE" quote that they live by. It shows how pretty much Winston's life has been flipped turned upside down. Great post.
