Winston is realizing that his life is so much easier if he just accepts the society he is in, as opposed to being rebellious and going through the hard work or rebelling. After all, he was put in Room 101 all because of his crimes that could have been evaded if he just listened to the party. This reminds me a lot of our current political climate. Most specifically the 2016 Presidential election. Hillary Clinton lost a lot of votes due to the scandals, her votes went to Trump or third party candidates. Now all the people who voted for third party candidates regret wasting their vote. They wanted so bad to rebel against Hillary that they gave their vote to a third party like the Green Party.

Book 3 Chapters 1-3
Chapter 2
"Who controls the past controls the future: who controls the present controls the past" (313)
This quote is very import and I believe it perfectly encapsulates the main idea that the book is based off of. To control the past and dictate what happened is to control how people will act in the future. We ten to make a lot of our decisions based on past events but if that is being controlled then the future can be controlled greatly. To control the present is in reverse reinstating the first part of the quote. To control what people do in the very moment means you are building a past for them to reflect on and refer back to to make decisions.

Book 2 CH 7-10
Chapter 7
" He turned and fled down the stairs, with the chocolate growing sticky in his hand. He never saw his mother again." (205-206)
In this vital chapter, Winston wakes up from a dream where he vividly remembers what happened to his mother and sister. He had often thought that his mother was no longer around because he had killed her, but it turns out that that was all a fragment of his imagination. He never killed his mom or his sister, he just simply ran away from them. Winston was mad at the party because this was an important moment in his life that was suppressed due to the party's brainwashing. This reminds me a lot of dogs, I feel that due to their domestication, dogs suppress a lot of their instincts just as Winston has suppressed his emotions and this memory. I believe that all those videos of dogs running in their sleep is them dreaming about their suppressed instincts just as Winston has dreamt of his family.

Book 2 CH 3-6
Chapter 3:
"She had never heard of the Brotherhood, and refused to believe in its existence. Any kind of organized revolt against the Party, which was bound to be a failure, struck her as stupid" (165)
Here Julia is talking about the resistance, she believes that it doesn't exist and she goes on to prove that she doesn't want to revolt. All she cares about is having sex and having her fun. I believe that this shows the amount of immaturity that Julia has but more importantly offers a contrast to Winston's reason to revolt.
Chapter 4:
"countless similar songs published for the benefit of the proles by a sub-section of the Music Department" (173)
This quote shows how controlled the proles are, they don't even have a say in what their music should be. They are brainwashed and kept steady in the most ways possible as to impede their revolt. Oceania is very aware that if the proles united they could overthrow the government, but they have them so neatly controlled that this isn't really an issue.

Book 1 Ch 7-8, Book 2 Ch 1-2
Book 1
CHAPTER 7
"If there was hope, it must lie in the proles" (69)
Here he talks about how Oceania could be overthrown, he recognizes that the biggest group in Oceania are the proles as they make up 85% of the country. If they got together they could overthrow the government. Unfortunately tho they are not very smart and ignorant to the control over them,
CHAPTER 8
"he saw that it was a human hand severed at the wrist. . . he kicked it into the gutter" (84)
I believe that this quote beautifully illustrates the way Oceania treats the whole 'Peace is war' thing they have going on. Their citizens are so used to it that they don't mind or truly really think twice about such incidents. A rocket had passed by and Winston saw the hand lying there after the attack and didn't find disgust in it at all. He just saw it as a bother.

Book 2
CHAPTER 1
"on it was written, in a large unformed handwriting 'I love you'" (108)
In this chapter, Winston discovers that dark-haired girl loves him. This is dangerous and they chose to meet in Victory Square at a Eurasian prisoners' tormenting.
CHAPTER 2
"'It was something in your face. . . as soon as I saw you I knew you were against them'" (122)
This quote is a quote from Julia when Winston asked her why she was attracted to him. Julia is a very smart and sneaky girl as she is able to look like a very dedicated citizen when in reality she's far from that. I have a prediction/concern, if she could tell that he was against Oceania, then who else can tell?

CHAPTERS 2-6
Chapter 2:
"With those children, he thought, that wretched woman must lead a life of terror. Another year, two years, and they would be watching her night and day for symptoms of unorthodoxy." (24)
Winston Smith is a man that has committed thought crime as he has not only bought a diary but he also has non-patriotic views written in it, all punishable by death. The children serve as junior spies that spy on their surrounding adults and keep them in check. Winston knows that these kids will grow up to become more vigilant and dangerous to society as they will grow up to look out for big brother.
Chapter 3:
"Winston could not definitely remember a time when his country had not been at war" (32)
The country of Oceania believes that you must be at war to be at peace. They have issues with Eurasia and Eastasia and when they ally with one, they fight with the other.
Chapter 4:
"Winston's greatest pleasure in life was his work. . . delicate pieces of forgery in which you had nothing to guide you except your knowledge of Ingsoc and your estimate of what the party wanted you to say" (43)
Winston works in the ministry of Truth for the Records Department. Here he alters the truth of articles as to always show that big brother is not wrong and that big brother knows everything. I believe that this very much relates to today's day as we have Donald Trump in presidency and he gave us the ever so infamous"alternative facts". These alternative facts are altered versions of the truth, or just lies. These alternative facts go in favor of Trump so he can always look right.
Chapter 5:
"We're destroying words-scores of them. . . we're cutting the language down to the bone" (51)
This quote is from a conversation between Winston and Syme, Syme is working on the new edition of newspeak which is a new language whose purpose is to make it so that citizens cannot say anti-Oceanic views. Their logic is that if no one knows the word for the rebellion, then it just won't be said or even happen. This new language is seen as a way to control people.
Chapter 6:
"Chastity was as deeply ingrained in them as Party loyalty" (67)
This refrain from sexual acts shows just how controlling Oceania is. They are so controlling that from a young age they condition their citizens to build a resistance/tolerance for sexual desires as these are seen as a vice. The only reason the government wanted their citizens to have sex is to continue repopulating the country.
